Headpieces were popular, but certainly not universal in the 1940s. Many women did not wear headpieces, but many did. Those who did, wore hats, snoods, or turbans. See snoods and turbans below.
![]() ![]() One type of headpiece, popular since the Middle Ages, and still popular in the 1940s, was the snood, a kind of hair net. There were many styles. The first picture above shows a typical snood: not ostentatious, but neither is it virtually invisible. Next comes a snood of a finer weave, and which is held on by a headband. Snoods ran the gamut from so sheer as to be hard to see (below left), to very bold and obvious, as the crocheted example (below right) illustrates.
